Rarely does an abortion affect a woman’s menstrual cycle or her future ability to get pregnant. In fact, your body can begin ovulating as early as two to three weeks following the procedure, meaning you could become pregnant again almost immediately, even before your next period.
The key to avoiding pregnancy is understanding your body and its ovulation cycle. The team at The Hope Clinic can answer your questions and provide information about abortion and your monthly cycle. Make a no-cost and confidential appointment today.
How Does a Woman’s Monthly Cycle Work?
Every woman’s menstrual cycle, just like every woman, is unique. In fact, a woman’s cycle can vary from one month to the next. You are most likely to get pregnant during ovulation, but determining the timing of ovulation can be tricky.
What is Ovulation?
According to the Mayo Clinic, “Ovulation is the process in which an egg is released from an ovary.” The average menstrual cycle is 28 days. Ovulation typically occurs around 12 to 16 days after the start of your last menstrual period.
Since sperm can live inside a woman’s body for 3 to 5 days after sex, the possibility of pregnancy is highest during those days around ovulation. Some doctors suggest you are most fertile from day 8 through day 19.
How Do I Know When I’m Ovulating?
There are various ways to watch for signs of ovulation:
- Changes in the color and consistency of discharge from the vagina.
- Changes in body temperature (basal).
- Some women may experience ovulation pain.
Can I Track Ovulation?
Here are a few different methods to track ovulation:
- Apps that help you monitor your menstrual cycle. However, research suggests that period tracker apps may not be as reliable as they are presented to be.
- Observing physical changes (vaginal discharge, physical pain, or basal body temperature)
- Home ovulation test kits (these detect hormonal changes that occur right before ovulation)
