Maternity homes offer a safe place for women experiencing pregnancy or early motherhood to find support with other women in similar situations. One positive aspect is the opportunity to learn life skills that will be useful after leaving the maternity home program.
Every maternity home’s programs and offerings are unique, as every facility is different. However, all aim to provide safety, stability, and preparation for the future.
If you are located near Decatur or Berne, Indiana, and are experiencing an unexpected pregnancy, we encourage you to look into Margie’s Place: A House of Hope. Our maternity home offers three residential suites for three expectant or new mothers with infants.
Women in our program learn essential life skills and set goals to begin living independently after their child turns one. Here are ways Margie’s Place helps teach life skills.
Through Daily Responsibilities
Margie’s Place functions like a family. Every resident plays a role in the household, such as completing specific chores and duties. Women refine their life skills through regular practice, feedback, and encouragement.
This could include cooking healthy meals, household chores, and administrative tasks.
Living alongside others also teaches relational skills and offers a chance to foster healthy relationships, learn conflict resolution, and navigate sharing a space.
Through Maternity Home Program Courses
Maternity homes like Margie’s Place often provide programming tailored to each resident or designed for all residents.
Parenting classes are absolutely essential for new and expectant moms, as caring for a baby involves training in safe sleep, breastfeeding, nutrition, diaper changing, bathing, and more.
Additionally, financial planning is a common course that teaches residents how to pay bills or taxes, write checks, and manage their finances through budgeting and saving. By learning these skills in a maternity home, women are prepared to build a brighter future for their families.
Based on each resident’s goals for after leaving the program, specific programming may be available. Women are encouraged to continue pursuing education, such as a GED, a college program, or a trade. Job-readiness and resume preparation help women find employment after the program to provide for their families.
Who Is Eligible for Maternity Homes?
Each maternity home outlines different criteria for residents and has varying availability. Margie’s Place is available to pregnant women or to those with a newborn who are over 18 years old. They must be drug-free for at least 30 days and willing to live by our program rules and guidelines.
