Have you found yourself in an unplanned pregnancy, and are unsure what to do next? With all the anxiety and unknowns, the last thing you want to do is rush into a decision without understanding the process. You deserve to know all the details.
You may feel overwhelmed by your options or confused by the Abortion Pill and Plan B. We can help you move forward with confidence by explaining these drugs and informing you of the risks.
How Does the Abortion Pill Work?
The Abortion Pill or Medication Abortion involves two different abortion pills, Mifepristone and Misoprostol, to terminate a pregnancy. It’s only performed on women up to 10 weeks of pregnancy. The first abortion pill, Mifepristone, blocks the progesterone hormone to prevent the embryo from implanting or growing. The second abortion pill, Misoprostol, causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy through the vagina through cramping and bleeding. This process has serious side effects and risks.
In order to be eligible for the Abortion Pill, you will need an ultrasound to know how far along you are and alert you to any pregnancy complications. Some risks of the Abortion Pill include:
- Fever
- Digestive discomfort
- Different types of infection
- Prolonged & heavy bleeding
- An incomplete abortion (This may require a surgical abortion)
- Abdominal cramping/pain
What Is Plan B?
Also known as the Morning After Pill, women take Plan B after having unprotected sex to prevent pregnancy. It uses the hormone, Levonorgestrel, to change the cervix and stop sperm from reaching the uterus. It also makes it difficult for a fertilized egg to attach to the uterus. Some risks of Plan B include:
- Dizziness
- Fatigue
- Headaches
- Irregular bleeding between periods
- Nausea
- Stomach cramps
- Tender breasts
- Vomiting
The most significant difference between the Abortion Pill and Plan B is the reason for use. While the Abortion Pill is intended to terminate a pregnancy, Plan B is intended to prevent a pregnancy.
